An Application of Sun-Tzu’s theory
Introduction
After World War II, the US Armed Forces have been the world’s hegemonic military force; however, they were decisively defeated in the Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War. Their defeat gave birth to the expression, an “American way of good-bye.” After this war, the US became interested in the Eastern military theorist named Sun-Tzu. The US Military Academy uses the Art of Warfare by Sun-Tzu as one of its core textbooks. What, then, were the causes of the US-South Vietnam coalition forces’ defeat according to Sun-Tzu’s theories? This paper will mainly analyze the Second Indochina War initiated by the US bombing on North Vietnam in 1964, considered to be an actual military intervention, in three critical aspects and discuss them with the theories outlined by Sun Tzu. I will start with a comparison of the both sides’ way (Tao) by examining the context and the progress of the Vietnam War. Then I will compare the strategies of the US and North Vietnam including the Vietcong in order to verify the importance of effective strategies. Lastly, I will analyze the result of the Tet Offensive and the Khe-Sanh Combat to further the readers’ understanding of how an ancient war theory can illuminate the course of the modern warfare.
