1. [Personal Statement]
I grew up constantly exposed to different languages and cultures, as my family relocated several times across Asia and Europe. Adapting to new school systems and communities, I quickly learned that genuine curiosity and open communication are the keys to bridging unfamiliar worlds. My turning point came in high school when I volunteered at a local NGO assisting North Korean refugee youth in Seoul. I realized how policy decisions at the international level have a profound impact on individual lives. While tutoring a student struggling to adjust, I listened to stories of separation and hope. I wanted to understand why cooperation often breaks down despite good intentions, and how ordinary people are affected by global issues. At university, I gravitated toward international relations and development courses, but it was field research in Vietnam on rural education projects that truly shaped my goals. Working with local partners, I witnessed the gap between policy ideals and community needs. I learned that effective cooperation requires humility, persistence, and willingness to listen. Each experience left me with more questions: How can cross-border collaboration be more inclusive? What does real impact look like? I want to use my skills not just to analyze but to help build meaningful partnerships across countries. My journey so far has taught me that international cooperation isn’t abstract it’s personal, practical, and demands constant self-reflection.
2. [Motivation for applying to SNU GSIS]
I am applying to SNU GSIS because I want to deepen my understanding of international cooperation where theory meets real-world application. During my undergraduate years, I often found myself seeking out interdisciplinary perspectivescombining political science with economics and area studiesto better understand the forces shaping regional integration and development in East Asia. SNU GSIS stands out for its strong focus on both rigorous academic research and hands-on engagement through seminars, group projects, and policy practicums. I am particularly drawn to courses related to multilateral institutions, development finance, and regional governance. When I visited the GSIS campus, I was struck by the diversity and dynamism of the student body and the open, globally-minded environment. Conversations with current students confirmed that collaborative learning and critical debate are valued as much as individual achievement. I am motivated by the opportunity to learn alongside peers who are passionate about making a positive difference. The school’s networks with Korean ministries, international organizations, and NGOs offer a unique chance to connect classroom learning with policy experience. Ultimately, I want to be challenged to think beyond conventional approaches and to develop practical skills for facilitating cooperation across cultures and sectors. SNU GSIS is the place where I believe I can grow into the kind of professional who can bridge theory, policy, and practice.
3. [Study Plan]
My academic plan at SNU GSIS is rooted in my goal to understand how multilateral cooperation can drive practical change, especially in East Asia. I want to approach international cooperation from a multidisciplinary perspective, so I plan to take core courses on international organizations, development policy, and quantitative analysis in my first semester. Building on my background in political science, I aim to challenge myself in areas like public finance and project evaluation, which I realized are essential for shaping sustainable development programs. I am excited to join the International Cooperation track and participate in workshops that connect classroom theory with policy practice. Through case studies on ASEAN and regional trade, I want to examine why some partnerships succeed while others stall. Group projects and seminars are where I hope to learn mostlistening to classmates with field experience and debating practical solutions. I am particularly interested in Professor Lee’s work on cross-border migration and Dr. Kim’s research on governance and local participation. I plan to seek out their mentorship for guidance on my thesis, which I hope will explore the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in regional development. Outside of class, I want to be active in student organizations and join the field practicum. By the end of my studies, I want to not only master theoretical models but also be able to design and assess actual cooperation projects that serve local communities.
4. [Career Goals]
My career goal is to work as a project officer or policy analyst at an international organization, where I can help design and implement development cooperation programs. My fieldwork in Vietnam and NGO experience in Korea showed me
