    Mary와의 다툼과 화해 후에 Colin은 자신감을 얻고 Dickon과 그의 동물들을 만나기로 한다. Dickon은 여러 동문들을 데리고 Colin을 방문하는데 “소년”과의 첫 만남, 그리고 다양한 동물들을 직접 보고 만지는 경험은 Colin에게 생명력을 불러넣어 준다.
    Mary와 Dickon의 설명을 들으며 비밀의 정원에 대해 상상의 나래를 펼치던 Colin은 마침내 직접 비밀의 정원을 방문하기로 결심하고 계획을 아무도 눈치채지 못하게 다녀올 계획을 짠다. 마침내 비밀의 정원에 도착한 Colin은 영원히 살고싶다는 말을 외치며 삶에 대한 애착을 보인다.

    "Are you making Magic?" he asked sharply.
    Dickon's curly mouth spread in a cheerful grin.
    "Tha's doin' Magic thysel'," he said. "It's same Magic as made these 'ere work out o' th' earth," and he touched with his thick boot a clump of crocuses in the grass. Colin looked down at them.
    "Aye," he said slowly, "there couldna' be bigger Magic than that there--there couldna' be."

    "Because it doesn't make me angry any more to see her laughing. I wakened when it was bright moonlight two nights ago and felt as if the Magic was filling the room and making everything so splendid that I couldn't lie still. I got up and looked out of the window. The room was quite light and there was a patch of moonlight on the curtain and somehow that made me go and pull the cord. She looked right down at me as if she were laughing because she was glad I was standing there.
