Pulmonary contusion has been reported as occurring in up to 25 per cent of patients who sustain blunt chest trauma
Isolated pulmonary contusion is associated with a mortality of up to 25 per cent, and a mortality of 50 per cent when associated with ARDS.
To determine whether the accurate measurement of isolated pulmonary contusion, using helical CTscanning, can be used to predict those patients which will succumb to respiratory failure early in their hospital course.
