- 명사 앞에 형용사가 있더라도 복수일 때와 셀 수 없는 명사일 때는 ‘the'를 사용하지 않지만 명사를 따라 ’of'가 쓰이면 ‘the'를 사용한다.
ex. She's studying Chinese history.
She's studying the history of Chinese.
- 어떤 것의 전체를 말할 때 ‘the'를 사용하며 과학적, 기술적 언어에서는 일반적이다.
ex. Who invented the telescope?
I can't play the piano.
I hate the telephone.
- 관사, this, that 바로 뒤에 소유격을 쓸 수 없다.
ex. She's a friend of mine.
How's that brother of yours?
- 보통 몸이나 옷의 부분들을 가리킬 때 소유격을 사용한다.
ex. Anne broke her arm skiing.
He stood there, his eyes closed and his hands in pockets.
