I believe that the ending of the story wants to talk about the inborn conscience that lies within humans which is evil. This can be shown through the characteristics of the protagonist. The man is a render of our secret desire: we all have certain desires to destroy and wreck, but are afraid to actually put it into actions. We also have mixed emotions towards others. The man is brave enough to express his real feeling and kills the man.
