    Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. owns, manages and franchises some of the most well-known brands in the hotel industry.

    Starwood is a relatively young company, however they have a history full of stories of growth, innovation, and triumph.

    Brief History of Starwood

    1991: Starwood Capital Group is founded.
    1993: Starwood begins buying hotels.
    1994: Starwood The Westin Hotel Company from Aoki Corporation of Japan.
    1998: Starwood acquired the Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton, and The Luxury Collection brands from ITT Sheraton.

    1999: Starwood launched their "W" Hotels brand.

    2005: Starwood announced the launch of aloft, a new hotel brand based on W.

    2006: Starwood acquires Le Méridien. 137 properties, primarily located in Europe and the Middle East, become part of the Starwood family.

    2010: Starwood celebrates a significant milestone with the opening of its 1000th hotel.
