hwp작업을 잠시 쉬고 있던 중, 빅터는 자신의 행동이 부도덕하다는 것을 생각하였고, 그때 마침 창가에서 그를 바라보며 웃고 있는 괴물을 발견 하게 된다. 빅터는 그런 괴물을 보자 분노가 일어 작업하던 것을 갈갈이 찢어버리고, 괴물은 약속을 깨버린 빅터를 저주하며 복수를 결심한다. 빅터는 클레르발의 편지를 받고 섬을 떠나기로 마음먹고, 작업 재료들을 버리려고 바다에 나갔다가 파도에 휩쓸려 아일랜드 해안가로 떠내려가고, 그 곳에서 살해 누명을 쓰게 된다. 빅터는 살해당한 사람이 클레르발이라는 것을 확인하고는 심하게 앓는다. 두달 만에 깨어난 곳은 감옥이었다. 판사의 도움으로 빅터는 아버지를 만날 수 있었고, 그 덕분에 건강도 회복할 수 있었지만, 우울증이 그를 괴롭혔다. 살인 혐의를 벗고 고국으로 돌아가도 좋다는 허락을 받은 빅터는 아버지와 함께 아일랜드를 떠난다.
