The Complexities of Pride The Seoul Pride parade should be recognized as a complex site that interacts with various issues conflicting within Korean society, rather than a simple mass protest. Previous studies of Pride parades have mainly focused on those held in Western countries such as the United States, Europe, and Australia.
However, there is a view that Pride parades held in non-Western countries need to be interpreted differently due to different social contexts.
This perspective sheds light on how the Seoul Pride parade operates in complex ways related to various issues such as developmentalism in Korea, oppositional gender norms, and the role of Europe and the United States, rather than being reducible to a simple binary of resistance and assimilation (Bilic, 2016). Bilic's (2016) book, "Global Pride: A Comparative Perspective on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Activism and Mobilization," provides a broader context for understanding LGBTQ activism and mobilization globally. By comparing LGBTQ movements in different parts of the world, the book highlights the diverse challenges and strategies that activists employ to achieve their goals.
